Advanced Research and Development Services

(Semi)pilot setups

We offer pilot and demonstrator setups designed to bring innovative technologies closer to real-world applications. We specialize in advancing technologies to Technology Readiness Level (TRL 6), bridging the gap between lab-scale breakthroughs and industrial-scale implementation. Our facilities include advanced tools like CO2 and H2O electrolysis systems and plasma reactors, that allow us to test and refine processes at pilot-scale.

CO2 electrolysis transforms carbon dioxide into valuable products using electrical energy, supporting efforts in carbon capture and utilization. Meanwhile, water electrolysis produces clean hydrogen by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen without generating carbon emissions.

In addition, we have various plasma reactors that can convert gases at high flowrates and were developed for CO2 conversion to CO, CH4 conversion into olefins, H2 and valuable carbon, the combined CO2 and CH4 conversion (dry reforming of methane, DRM) for syngas production, CO2 hydrogenation or partial oxidation of CH4 for oxygenates synthesis, N2 fixation into NH3 or NOx for fertilizer production, and NH3 cracking for green H2 formation.

Blue App also offers a pre-pilot electrothermal fluidized bed reactor (ETFB), with the possibility of continuous processing of granular solid materials. The ETFB is a fluidized bed reactor where the heat is generated directly in the bed using resistive (joule) heating.

Engineering Makerspace

Our engineering makerspace is designed for innovation and rapid prototyping. Here, we offer comprehensive manufacturing and testing facilities, enabling businesses to turn ideas into prototypes and go beyond the state-of-the-art of commercially available reactors. Whether it's creating custom equipment or testing early-stage technologies, our space supports the entire development cycle. Our makerspace allows industries to explore, experiment, and bring new concepts to life, ensuring that the transition from research to practical application is smooth and efficient.

ENCORE is the service platform of the institute dedicated to advancing green chemistry through the design and production of bespoke (electro)chemical flow reactors. With an in-house expertise in designing and constructing gas-liquid and liquid-liquid electrochemical reactors and redox flow batteries, ENCORE addresses the most pressing R&D challenges in flow chemistry and the green chemistry landscape.

Advanced Analytical Laboratory

Our advanced analytics consist of innovative tools to measure operating conditions, as well as engineering analytics to validate models for mass and energy transfer. These analytics offer detailed process evaluation services that help industries understand the behavior and performance of their technologies. We use specialized equipment to conduct gas and liquid analyses, measuring key properties of gases and liquids in real time. This allows us to evaluate the outcomes of experimental processes, ensuring they are both efficient and sustainable by identifying potential improvements or issues early on.
